Your hospital will call you with detailed pre-operative instructions before your procedure. Below are general guidelines for pre-operative care.
Adults should refrain from eating and drinking (even water) for at least 8 hours prior to their procedure. For children, the amount of time they should refrain from eating and drinking depends on their age. Your hospital will confirm the NPO (no eating or drinking) time based on your child's age and the time of the procedure.
If you take any blood thinners or aspirin, please discuss when to stop these medications with your surgeon. These medications may cause an increased risk of bleeding complications both during and after your surgery. Please make sure to tell your hospital of all your current medications as some may need to be discontinued prior to your surgery.
For patients undergoing general anesthesia, a person will need to be available to drive the patient home if it is a same day or outpatient surgery.
Failure to comply with all hospital instructions can carry significant and severe risks. Surgery will often be cancelled by the anesthesiologist if you do not adhere to your pre-operative care instructions. If you have any questions, please discuss them with your doctor before your procedure.
